Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary

I grew up around horses but had never thought of photographing them since most of my interest is with wildlife. I was given the opportunity to join a photography group at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary near Hot Springs, South Dakota so I jumped at the chance. Boy was it worth it!!! The horses are beautiful and although the 1st day was overcast and rainy we were still able to get some nice images. The second day our morning photo session was incredible. The weather was cool and clear and the horses were VERY energetic. Some of the horses at the sanctuary are fed by the staff to keep them in an area so tourists can view them. The staff drove the feed truck back and forth and around our group and the horses chased after it. Sometimes they just ran around for reasons only they know. There were two herds of paint horses and they were my favorites. I've never seen such a "Flashy" herd! There were also numerous horses whose color is called "Grulla". Grulla is a dark gray horse with a dark stripe down their back and many have zebra-like markings on their legs. It was a great opportunity and I'm glad I went.

  • The foal was the only one we saw at the Sanctuary and never got far from it's mother. The mother is the buckskin mare in front of the foal.

  • I liked the horse closest to the camera in this image.
  • A peaceful moment as the horses stand several yards from our bus. A short time after this image was taken, the horses all ran off. I'm not sure why they left but it was cool to see...and HEAR!
  • I wonder what this horse was trying to tell us... :-)
  • These horses were running out of the hills to the feed troughs.
  • Grulla and Buckskin horses running past the photographers.

  • I've seen Grulla horses like the one on the right but this is the first time I've seen a horse colored like the one on the left. It is a Dun Grulla.
  • A portrait of the Dun Grulla.
