Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge
Thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Geese and Ducks spend the winter at the Bosque del Apache NWR and become accustomed to photographers. We stopped at there for only a few hours in 2008 and knew we needed to return when we had more time. We finally made it back in January, 2011 and had a great time and got a lot of great images. After we returned home we learned a severe winter storm was going to pass through the area so I drove all night to beat the storm. It turned out to be one of my best trips ever! Although the temperature hovered near zero, and sometimes below, the combination of birds and snow made for some great images. I plan on returning again next year!!! I was able to stop for just one evening and one morning at Bosque del Apache in January 2012 but got some of my best images yet! I love this place!!!

Snow Geese sleeping on lake
Here is a four-image panorama of a lake with hundreds of sleeping snow geese. At one point they all woke up and started making the same noise in unison. They then all quit and most of them tucked their heads back under their wings and went back to sleep. I have no idea what that was all about.
