Carlsbad Caverns National Park

We visited Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and I have posted some of the images I took here. It was a challenge to get proper exposures in such a large and dark environment, but at least some turned out okay. I hope you enjoy looking at them and I highly recommend visiting the park.

  • It's a steep drop into the cave opening. This is the best way to get into the caverns unless you are pressed for time. The quicker way is to take an elevator 750 feet down to the "Big Room". It will take about an hour and a half to two hours off your hike to just visit the Big Room but you'll also miss a lot of the cave.

  • Note the handrails on the sides of the trails. They were just over 3 feet high which gives some perspective of how high the stalagmites are.

  • This Tarantula was walking near our car in the parking lot when we came out of the Caverns. He tried to avoid his picture being taken but his threats didn't scare me.
  • He eventually climbed an Ocotillo plant to avoid being photographed but I got him there too. After several photos he continued on his way.
  • Rattlesnake Canyon overlook is accessed through a 9.5 mile scenic loop after leaving the visitor's center. This image is actually 3 images stitched together in a program called Autopano Pro.
