Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge : Thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Geese and Ducks spend the winter at the Bosque del Apache NWR and become accustomed to photographers. We stopped at there for only a few hours in 2008 and knew we needed to return when we had more time. We finally made it back in January, 2011 and had a great time and got a lot of great images. After we returned home we learned a severe winter storm was going to pass through the area so I drove all night to beat the storm. It turned out to be one of my best trips ever! Although the temperature hovered near zero, and sometimes below, the combination of birds and snow made for some great images. I plan on returning again next year!!! I was able to stop for just one evening and one morning at Bosque del Apache in January 2012 but got some of my best images yet! I love this place!!!

Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge : Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is located about an hour west of Houston, Texas near the town of Sealy. I have been there many times but have yet to see an Attwater Prairie Chicken but that's okay because there is an abundance of other birds and animals. There is even a herd of about 45 American Bison.

Aransas NWR : The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is where the Whooping Cranes spend the winter and is an important stop-over for many birds on their annual migratory routes. We had not been there in a number of years and when we went on May 22, 2009 it was in the middle of a drought. Most of the marshlands had dried up and we saw two racoons in the middle of the day and they looked very thin and sickly. We did see some feral hogs and javelinas that looked fairly healthy and we saw numerous turkeys. We did see a few alligators near the visitors center in the alligator viewing area. We did see a lot of birds but with the exception of the turkeys we were unable to get close enough to take any images. We returned on June 1, 2009 and found there had been a fair amount of rain. It is still very dry but we did see water where we hadn't seen it before. We got to the Refuge early and found several snakes soaking up the warmth on the road. The raccoons and deer were also out in large numbers.

Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge : Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge is located near Alamosa, Colorado in south-central Colorado. We did not realize it was there until we saw the sign while traveling west from Great Sand Dunes National Park. We did not have much time to visit but it appears it is mainly for waterfowl. Much of the water appeared to have dried up but there was some in the man-made canals. We saw quite a few species of birds but did not have enough time to photograph all of them. The ones pictured in this gallery were the few we could get close to during our limited visit. We will return when we can stay longer.
